Historically, both men and women had clearly defined roles shaped by survival needs, not personal preference. Men were often expected to fight in wars, do dangerous physical labor, and provide materially. Women, at the same time, were expected to bear and raise large families, manage households without modern technology, produce clothing and food from scratch, support extended family networks, and often take on physically demanding agricultural or factory work—especially during wartime. Today, society has changed dramatically. We have smaller families, modern appliances, advanced medicine, professional childcare, and far more career opportunities for both men and women. Just as men are no longer universally drafted or working in coal mines, women are no longer universally expected to have many children, stay home full-time, or sacrifice education and careers. So it’s not that one gender ‘used to do more’ and now ‘does nothing.’ The structure of society changed for everyone. The conversation today shouldn’t be about nostalgia for rigid past roles, but about how both men and women can contribute meaningfully in a modern world where expectations and opportunities are different.
