Coming from a African and Jamaican culture, it’s quite normal to physically discipline your children, as I’m sure it is in many other cultures outside the western world. Unfortunately some go too far; others are quite lenient. Thankfully I was in the latter category, make I got was a firm grip on my wrist when I nish behaved as a toddler, which that often. Which was effective in teaching me what was acceptable and what wasn’t. Would I physically discipline my kids? I don’t think so, but there’s plenty other ways that I can learn to discipline them, in a way that will encourage them to learn and be better next time.

I'm from a culture who does this. I remember getting the belt a couple of times, and hoping my dad won't use the metal part. Or my brother and I would often hope it would be our mom who would do it--- at least it's less painful. And they always end it with "I'm doing this because I love you." And since I'm programmed to love my parents, I accepted it. I still get mini anxiety attacks especially when I hear a kid cry because they're being disciplined. I've seen other kids get way worse punishments than I did. My answer is long winded but I'm not a parent. It's the only reference I got. But my answer is no, not acceptable. It causes me anxiety even two decades after so it would probably be the same for my future kids. And I think I turned up decent not because of the punishments but inspite of it.

No. I think physical discipline is a telltale sign of poor parenting skills. What kind of parents resort to violence towards their own children? It does both sides nothing good. You get damaged children who grow up to damaged adults with all sorts of issues. You get guilty parents who are trapped in cycles they can't break. Or worse, parents who find some perverse pleasure from beating their own children. That's why I'm an advocate of gentle parenting. And please, for the love of everything that is holy, DO NOT become parents if you're not ready and prepared for it.

I think physical discipline teaches children that using physical force is a responsible method to get your way. Which doesn’t seem like a good lesson. So, that is something to keep in mind.
