A new look at the old theory of telegony Many of us have heard of telegony — the theory that a woman can "transfer" traits of previous sexual partners to her children. Once considered a myth or a fairy tale... but what if it’s not entirely baseless? A 2012 study (Czerwinski et al., PLOS ONE) found fragments of male DNA (Y chromosome) in female brains. These could, in theory, come from pregnancies with male fetuses... But what about women who never gave birth to sons? Where did the male genetic material in their brains come from? This phenomenon is called microchimerism – the long-term presence of foreign cells or DNA in the body. Interestingly, 8% of our genome consists of remnants of ancient viruses that once "infected" us but now are part of our genetic code – information carriers passed through generations.
