Why do so many people not consider adoption?

This question is primarily for the women out there. People typically either look forward to having their own kids, or not having children altogether. I was NOT adopted, but with so many kids needing loving homes it kind of bothers me that so many people don't consider adopting. Part of my opinion on this matter is not just that there are kids needing adoption, but we have a population problem on our planet. Look up the environmental impact that having 1 child has on our planet--you might be surprised at what you find. Even the extremely eco conscious people seem to want "their own" children which I think is somewhat hypocritical. I'm confident I don't want children, which due to my age doesn't help my dating prospects, and I'm somewhat appalled at the idea of bringing more life into an increasingly hectic world. Lastly and probably most controversially, I deem this desire to have biological children largely selfish since it's pretty much a desire not a need. You can live out all the parenting fantasies (well maybe except the birth/infancy parts) with an adoped child.

Love everything I just read here! Being asking myself the same question for years. I would rather be a single parent and raise/nurture/guide a soul in need instead of the " typical married couple with bio kids". Mankind needs to unify, it might end Racism and help with our population surplus. Just my take 💁🏾‍♂️

I’ve always wanted to adopt or foster. Knowing there are a lot of children stuck in a broken system made me want to in high school (I watched a lot of documentaries on that stuff). Even if I did have kids, I’d still want to. It’s a scary world that is so ready to break kids and broken kids create broken adults.

I totally agree with what you said. I have asked many women who are basically in the same church I went to and the reasons are various, ranging from the weirdest reason such as "I want to see the child who has the face just like me" to religious reason such as "replenish the earth and allow more souls to come to this life" etc. I also cannot understand why people don't consider adoption provided many benefits and population problem like you said.

I also don't understand it. If someday I want to have kids, I definitely would adopt them I can try to explain that with the maternal instincts. The purpose of a living being is to continue genus. The human being never had a need to care about other people's children (like orca). So from the point of view of biology, this makes sense to me, you're interested in make babies and kill the competitors. In an advanced society this could manifest in love for your kids and hate for the everyone's else, this is just an atavism The other explication would be the kid's psicological state. A kid from orphanage may be different from other children. He could have mental problems because he haven't parents most of his life. The mother that left him could be drinking when she was pregnant, etc. I think people are afraid of this things

It's something we all have thought about, but after all, it's a property of our existence. The thing that makes you want children is the same thing that makes you want a lovely relationship, or a friendship or to socialize or to be rich... If we apply 100% rationality to our lives, getting kids would not be the only questionable thing. I'd be happy if adoption was more commonplace, i would also be happy if people who abandon their children were punished. You blame those who don't adopt, i blame the people that created the need for adoption. There are rare cases where a born child has an entirely dead family tree, but if it was only about these children, no shelter would have had a remaining child. Also... It is definitely untrue that having children does more damage than good. You should look at it with a wider lens. the cost may be the higher consumption of natural resources, but whoever made that argument had never studied economy. The downside to having an upside-down pyramid of age distribution for a population can inflict more damage to human stability and existence. Unless you do not value human existence ofc.
