Denying the Antecedent Structure: If A, then B. Not A, therefore not B. Example: If I study, I’ll pass the test. I didn’t study, so I won’t pass. Issue: It’s possible to pass without studying. --- 2. Informal Fallacies (Errors in Content or Context) These are more about the argument's content or how it's presented rather than its logical form. a. Ad Hominem (Personal Attack) Description: Attacking the person making the argument instead of the argument itself. Example: You’re wrong about climate change because you’re not a scientist. Issue: The person’s credentials or character don’t inherently refute their argument. b. Strawman Argument Description: Misrepresenting someone’s argument to make it easier to attack. Example: Person A: "We should reduce military spending." Person B: "So you want to leave our country defenseless?" Issue: Person A didn’t suggest abandoning defense altogether. c. Appeal to Authority Description: Claiming something is true because an authority figure or expert says so, without examining evidence. Example: A famous actor endorses a health product, so it must work. Issue: The authority figure may not have relevant expertise. d. False Dichotomy (Black-or-White Thinking) Description: Presenting only two options when more exist. Example: You’re either with us or against us. Issue: There could be neutral or alternative stances. e. Slippery Slope Description: Arguing that one action will lead to a series of negative events without evidence. Example: If we allow students to use calculators, they’ll never learn math and society will collapse. Issue: The chain of events is speculative and unsupported. f. Circular Reasoning (Begging the Question) Description: The conclusion is assumed in the premises. Example: The Bible is true because it says so in the Bible. Issue: The argument doesn’t provide external evidence. g. Hasty Generalization Description: Drawing a conclusion from insufficient or biased evidence. Example: My friend didn’t like the movie, so it must be terrible. Issue: One opinion isn’t representative of the entire population. h. Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc (False Cause) Description: Assuming that because one event follows another, the first caused the second. Example: I wore my lucky socks, and we won the game, so the socks caused the win. Issue: Correlation doesn’t imply causation. i. Appeal to Emotion Description: Manipulating emotions instead of providing logical reasoning. Example: You must donate to this charity; imagine how many children are starving. Issue: Emotional appeals can distract from evaluating evidence. j. Bandwagon Fallacy (Ad Populum) Description: Assuming something is true because many people believe it. Example: Everyone loves this product, so it must be the best. Issue: Popularity doesn’t equate to truth. k. Red Herring Description: Introducing irrelevant information to distract from the original issue. Example: When asked about economic policy, a politician shifts to talking about national security. Issue: The diversion doesn’t address the initial argument. l. False Equivalence Description: Treating two unequal things as if they are equivalent. Example: Eating fast food occasionally is as bad as smoking. Issue: The two situations have different degrees of harm. m. Appeal to Ignorance Description: Claiming something is true because it hasn’t been proven false (or vice versa). Example: Ghosts must exist because no one has proven they don’t. Issue: Lack of evidence isn’t evidence of truth. n. No True Scotsman Description: Defending a universal claim by dismissing counterexamples as exceptions. Example: "No true Scotsman puts sugar on porridge." When a Scotsman does, the response is, "Well, they’re not a true Scotsman." Issue: Redefining criteria to exclude counterexamples is arbitrary. --- 3. Specialized Fallacies a. Equivocation Description: Using a word with multiple meanings ambiguously. Example: The sign said, "Fine for parking here," so I thought parking was fine. Issue: It exploits linguistic ambiguity. b. Appeal to Nature Description: Arguing something is good because it’s natural or bad because it’s unnatural. Example: Herbal remedies are better because they’re natural. Issue: Naturalness doesn’t guarantee safety or efficacy. c. Composition and Division Description: Assuming what’s true of a part is true of the whole (composition) or vice versa (division). Example (Composition): All the ingredients in this dish taste good, so the dish must taste good. Example (Division): This car is excellent, so its engine must be excellent.
