Neuroplasticity vs General Intelligence
What is Neuroplasticity? Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to change, reorganize, and adapt throughout life. It’s the process by which the brain forms new neural connections and strengthens or weakens existing ones in response to experiences, learning, or injury. In simple terms, the brain isn't a static organ — it’s constantly evolving based on what we do, what we learn, and even what we think. This process is essential for learning and memory, as it allows the brain to adjust and improve its functioning in response to new information. For example, when you practice a new skill (like playing an instrument or learning a language), your brain physically changes to accommodate that learning. What is "g" (General Intelligence)? "g" refers to general intelligence, a concept proposed by Charles Spearman in the early 20th century. It’s a theoretical construct that represents a person's overall cognitive ability. In Spearman's model, people who perform well on one type of cognitive task (like math) are likely to perform well on other types (like logic or verbal reasoning). General intelligence includes things like: Problem-solving skills Logical reasoning Abstract thinking The ability to learn new information It’s a bit like your brain’s "processing power" for different cognitive tasks. People who score higher on IQ tests (which are designed to measure general intelligence) are often seen as having higher g. Can Neuroplasticity Change "g"? This is the tricky part. While neuroplasticity is indeed powerful in helping you learn new skills, improve your memory, and recover from injuries, it doesn’t necessarily lead to changes in general intelligence ("g") in the way people might hope. 1. Neuroplasticity and Skill Development Neuroplasticity can improve specific cognitive abilities like attention, memory, language, or motor skills. For example, if you practice a particular task repeatedly, the neural networks associated with that task strengthen, making you better at it. This is why musicians, athletes, or language learners can get so much better at their craft over time. In fact, research on neuroplasticity shows that the brain can create new neurons and synapses (the connections between them) in certain areas, such as the hippocampus (important for memory) and the prefrontal cortex (which helps with planning, decision-making, and problem-solving). 2. Does Neuroplasticity Improve "g"? Here’s where it gets more complex. While neuroplasticity allows for the strengthening of specific cognitive functions, general intelligence (g) is thought to be influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. The concept of "g" includes a broad range of abilities, many of which are difficult to change substantially, even with neuroplasticity. For example, if someone practices their memory, their working memory may improve. But improving working memory doesn’t always result in a significant, lasting increase in their IQ or their overall cognitive ability across the board. That said, some aspects of "g" might improve indirectly through neuroplasticity. For example: Improved attention and focus could lead to better performance on tasks requiring logical reasoning or abstract thinking. Increased working memory could help with problem-solving tasks, though this improvement might be specific to certain tasks rather than a broad increase in general intelligence. 3. Environmental Influence on "g" It’s also important to recognize that factors like environment, education, nutrition, and even the social conditions in which you live play a significant role in cognitive development. For example, an enriched environment (with access to learning, social interaction, and a variety of experiences) can enhance cognitive functioning in general. However, this doesn’t always translate directly into a measurable increase in "g." Research does show that experiences, such as intense learning or new types of challenges, can push the brain’s abilities to grow. But the idea that neuroplasticity can dramatically alter someone's baseline IQ (or general intelligence) is still debated. The Key Difference: Specific vs. General Intelligence Think of it like this: Neuroplasticity is fantastic at helping you develop specific skills (like learning a language, improving memory, or mastering a motor skill), but general intelligence (g) is much harder to change. Your ability to solve complex problems, reason abstractly, and understand novel concepts might improve slightly through training, but it’s not guaranteed to dramatically increase through neuroplasticity alone. Many researchers suggest that general intelligence has a strong genetic component, meaning that while your environment and experiences can influence how well you perform in various cognitive tasks, your baseline general intelligence may remain relatively stable over time. What Neuroplasticity Can’t Do for "g": It won’t magically make you smarter. While neuroplasticity enables learning and skill-building, it won’t turn someone with average intelligence into a genius. Your general cognitive potential is shaped by a combination of genetics and environment, but neuroplasticity won’t change the fundamental aspects of how you process complex ideas. It doesn’t directly increase IQ. IQ tests measure a range of cognitive abilities that are believed to be tied to general intelligence. Neuroplasticity can improve specific areas (like memory or focus), but these improvements typically don’t lead to large changes in overall IQ scores. Conclusion Neuroplasticity is a powerful and essential process that helps your brain learn and adapt, especially in response to new experiences and learning. It can help you improve specific cognitive abilities like memory, focus, and problem-solving. However, while neuroplasticity can make you better at certain tasks, it won’t dramatically alter your overall general intelligence (g). g is influenced by a combination of genetics and environment, and it’s relatively stable over time. So, while neuroplasticity is a real and incredible phenomenon, its effects on "g" are likely to be more subtle. However, improving specific cognitive functions through neuroplasticity is definitely possible, and this can lead to a range of cognitive benefits.

This is false. This is not neuroplasticity which imply intelligence and spécific capacities. Where did you find this abstract ? This is as much false as to say "blood presure is responsible for having big muscles and big eyes". This is somewhat relative, yet irrelevant. Usually, brain auto strenghten itself through practice. Neuroplasticity is just a mechanism, not the cause, as it can be observed. When you are used to do something, you ll tend to do it instead of something else. There is another mechanism which is more about learning to learn, or having brain mechanism making easier the forget and learn new knowledge mechanism. Some need more or less energy, depending on the training on this specific task. No more no less. As for the broken myth about limited amount of neurons. And the broken myth which imply that after reaching an advanced age, you cannot learn anymore. Brain can be harm with fast food, sugar, too much and unbalanced food.... ...we eat too much, and not what is good for health.
