I think it's fun to study the environment find distinguishing characteristics unlike the other places I've been to. Buildings, people, plants, even the sky, sometimes they're obvious and others it takes a closer look.

Depending on what time of day it is when I arrive, I try to sleep (if that is what I should be doing for the local time) or go for a walk to get myself accustomed to the sounds/smells/textures, what have you of my new space. It is overwhelming to do right after a voyage but I have found that just getting it done and over with makes it better for me in the long run. Talking to people in that span of time is a no-go. If I am travelling with people I warn them ahead of time that I am apt to mute out or sign to them. It would take days for me to feel right in my own skin in a new place. This forced assimilation, if you will, gets the job done quickly.
