There is an innumeral amount of guy profiles where they put "not good at writing these" and I always swipe left on those. You're telling me that you can't name one hobby in your description? Not one thing you like to do? You don't have any pets? You don't like to go anywhere? You don't have a favorite color? I feel like anything would be better than that. It gives "like me for my looks and I'll do the same to you". Edit: I am aware that women do this too. But I am a heterosexual woman and my focus is on the men that do that. I feel like guys truly believe that women don’t read their profiles which is the furthest thing from the truth and to me it comes off as self projecting. Maybe some (most) men don’t read the profiles of the women that they swipe right or left on but I bet anything most women do read the profiles of the men they are trying to pursue. Give us something of substance to go off of

If it's any consolation, I see this constantly from the other side as well, probably 50% of women's profiles are essentially blank except for some selfies.

It could also be about plausible deniability/keeping your options open. The more you explicitly define yourself in your profile, the more likely someone will skip you if they don't like it. Or even scarier, confront you with it, or judge you by it. By saying you're not good at writing these, you hope the other party won't judge/dismiss you based on your 'lousy work'. It's like a self-protection mechanism too for those insecure; if people reject your profile, you can blame the bad text instead of you as a person. (edited)

So, after writing my rather lengthy answer to this question I decided to read some of the other responses here. I was slightly more surprised by the male responses than the female ones. There were surprisingly a lot of men who agreed with the rather appalling opinions on here by women who simply said things implying: they dont know themselves, they're to lazy, they dont even try, vanity the one pics enough and suggesting by doing this it just makes it easier to swipe left. Oddly enough though this app actually spells out the person's personality traits right at the bottom of their profile. It tells you if their personality type may be compatible with yours. So if you actually took the time to scroll down you would see that and then can decide if this is a person you want to learn something about. If perhaps actually putting in the effort to get to know them really know them not just the " I like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain" "I like long walks on the beach at sunset". Real interaction, real meaningful conversation that leads to discovery.

I've invested a little into my profile without writing an essay or listing everything. Meanwhile, I will also swipe left on women's profiles that have nothing at all for a few reasons. You're giving a sales pitch for why I should talk to you and by saying, "I'm not good at writing these," tells me that you probably can't hold a conversation or have communication skills to talk through problems. But my guess would be it goes to show the effort they're willing to put into things, it's telling when it's their first impressions and they don't care much. But that's my opinion, not that it holds any weight! I feel it important to put effort into it though.

It's called 'low effort " and it's bait for women who accept the bare minimum. It does not bode well. Also it's a bit of egotism because they want you to go out of your way to pry information out of them that they could have just put on their profile; also being vague about things leaves things up in the air where they are not held to a standard. Things like "just looking to see where this goes" "ill fill this in later" "i don't take life too seriously" are all signs he's just gonna be a bad time. (edited)

Probably because they've been emotionally traumatized to a point where they are unsure of their worth or anything that makes them desirable to women and subsequently are not comfortable trying to sum up who they are as a person in a few paragraphs. I'm a good writer. I like writing too, I just don't like writing ad copy for myself to the vapid gaggles of entitled women flipping through men's profiles with all the indifference of a 2000s stoner channel surfing at 3 in the morning.
