I see INTJ women here on Boo being told to smile, because sometimes we have the expressionless INTJ face, or the famous INTJ frown. As women we're expected to be emotionally expressive BuT mAkE iT a "GoOd" EmOtIoN. Anyway, a few months ago, I received a request ("love") from a man, and on my profile I had the two pictures of myself you can see today. The man's first message: "I wish you smiled more" Not even a "hi". My first message: "I wish you breathed less" It doesn't answer your question, but I wanted to share the story. You're not alone; I don't understand this obsession with women smiling/looking happy and I wish it didn't exist. Maybe I'll find some answers in this comment section

Thinking about the situation as I see it. I wasn't taught that it was an inappropriate thing to ask of a person until I was in my mid-20s. So pure ignorance is part of the issue. We grew up with the concept that if our mother was smiling the situation was safe, but if she wasn't then expect the situation to quickly dissolve into a battle zone. So it's possible that young men ask an unsmiling woman to smile because it makes them feel the dread of an eminent explosion and they are pleading to the "grenade" not to go off. What I was guilty of the few times that I asked a woman to smile, was the greedy desire to glean a sip of serotonin or dopamine, a bit of happiness in my dismal gray day. I see women as one of the most beautiful pieces of art in the world. And I saw the women as bordering on the cusp of perfecting the scene in the painting of the moment. Guiltily I call to the art "smile!" Only saying it because you can hear it, but also inwardly wishing I could call out to the near perfect sunset "sunbeam!" I know now that I have no right to ask anyone to provide me with that happiness, or a sense of safety, or to change their expression to suit my needs. But these were the reasons that came to mind based on my experience with my own behavior and experience.

So many people taking offense at a simple comment. Asking someone to smile is probably comparable to ask someone to strike a pose…, right? And although it may be a bit odd it’s fun. It’s an in the moment action. If someone has an accent you might ask them to say a particular word. It’s not being mean or offensive it’s simply fun. Maybe y’all ain’t learn that but please reconsider being “offended”
