My favorite compliments are when I can see some good quality if character in what they did. .... Me: "I think that you ran that meeting amazingly well. Somehow you managed to get everyone to stay on topic and come to a consensus. I had no hope going into the meeting we would get anything done." Her: "Can you tell I'm a mom of 4 kids under the age of six? Basically, that's how I do it." .... Me: "You are really a fast learner and have demonstrated that you can handle the material. How about you give the briefing instead of me." Her: "What if they ask a question I can't answer?" Me: "In the first place, you got this. And if not, tell them you'll talk to them off-line and give me a call." Manager: "Wait, she's giving your briefing." Me: "Oh yeah. She's got it. She'll do great. If I didn't have 100% confidence in her, I wouldn't have asked her to do it." That vignette got captured in my letter of recommendation that she get promoted (and she did.) ... And so forth. I avoid complimenting physical features. It usually ends up like this: Me: "There's something different. Maybe in the face? Or hair? Or something?" Her: "Well, I washed my hair this morning." Me: {stammer, studder, choked on tongue and has to leave immediately} .... If I'm really struggling, I reach for "That's a nice name. Does it have any meaning to it?" .... In any case, we're not getting paid to stand around jabbering all day, so back to work, people.
