Does anyone else find it extremely infuriating how all Hispanics in the US seem to be lumped together into a single identity ? Most of the time the only thing we have in common is the language we speak. Assuming that the over 20 countries with Spanish as their official language share the same history, culture , and foods is honestly ridiculous. On top of that, the fact that some people can’t even comprehend that Hispanic is not a race just adds insult to injury.

I think everything is lumped together in the US, white, black, asian, brown, hispanic, sometimes I wonder, are they really didn't know that brown (India) is actually also asian? or they didn't care and only thing asian is a yellow people with slit-eye and if that's not them then it's not asian, that goes to hispanic too, anyone speaking spanish is from mexico 🤦🏻‍♂️

I was wondering the same thing. I have a friend who is latina and she said that her grandparents are from Mexico but she doesn't call herself Mexican since she wasn't born there, she just says she Hispanic or Chicana. I have another Mexican friend who says she is proud to be Mexican and proudly calls herself Mexican even tho she isn't from Mexico. Idk what is less offensive 😬. I just say Latin people and then ask them where they're people come from because I don't wanna offend.

My mom's side of the family are all Italians from Sicily. Growing up, other kids always asked if I was Mexican because I had tan skin, black hair, and brown eyes. What's funny is I'm considered "white". But I get it. I work with folks from many different Spanish speaking countries and until you're around them all enough to don't start picking up on the differences.

Yknow I saw something similar to this the other day at my PT function for the USMC pool. A sergeant looked at someone in my pool and referred to her as Hispanic...she's Indian. Like, her family derives from India. But just because she's brown he assumed she was Hispanic.

I don't let it bother me, but I notice. Every now and then something happens that sticks out more and I'll roll my eyes. But yes, it is a broad ethnic identity encompassing numerous cultures. I'm of Mexican descent, which I find to be a fascinating heritage, but I'm always interested to learn about other Hispanic and Latin cultures. Many similarities and many many differences.

So Ill be honest, I used to do that, then I worked with a bunch of guys who taught me other wise, I had Friends who some were from mexico, Guatamala, Puerto Rico, and so on they also taught me the each place has their own dialect of Spanish, so now when I talk to people I and it's obvious they immagrated here I ask where are they from I love to here about it and I don't lump them together

My Puerto Rican friends hated my Mexican friends and vice Versa. Italians don't like to be associated with Irish, Germans with Russians. Scottish with Irish. French with Irish. English with Irish. Blackfoot with Mayans. Hell I'm from Kentucky and don't like to be associated with people from Louisville Kentucky because it's it's different lifestyle in that part of the state than in Central Kentucky, and the people in Eastern Kentucky don't claim either of us.
