It isn’t selfish to look to indications that your feelings are reciprocated by another person (or pet for that matter). Someone expecting reciprocation is not exactly selfish in the way that we want to discourage. If you won’t reciprocate, why should another person have to deal with continual rejection?

Mary, while I agree with most of what you say, I have to disagree when you say "unconditional love doesn't exist". I would say that (most) parents love their children unconditionally. I would also say that (most) children have felt unconditional love from their parents. (Most) children love their parents unconditionally when they are young and their parents are solely responsible for their children's survival. I'm an animal lover and I am absolutely certain that I've felt unconditional love from some dogs I've known.

My default was unconditional love. Literally unconditional. I ended up getting used a lot and finding myself in bad situations. I've had to add some standards and conditions to protect myself. To show that same unconditional love to myself. My love is unconditional. Just don't make me choose between my unconditional love for you and my unconditional love for me. The answer will be both of you and I will have to make compromises. Sometimes the only compromise left that cares for both people is separation. Even in that, love was still unconditional. I can love a star on the other side of the universe that I can never touch or influence. I would like more, but more isn't always possible. That doesn't add a condition to love. It just means life is complicated. That's ok. Love doesn't have to be conditional. People don't have to be shallow, selfish creatures. You don't have to have very precise conditions on how you want your partner to look or act. If you have a kid, they turn out pretty much however they're going to turn out. You can and should still love them. When your partner ages, they aren't how you wanted them to look or act anymore. You can still love them. Your standards don't have to be precise on looks or behavior. You can be better.
