I'm curious what you think about being bought a drink as an initial form of contact..? I find it rather creepy being offered, kinda like "ooo a pretty girl, let's get her drunk". Maybe it's how I was brought up as well, but it's also the matter of feeling like I owe you something if you buy me something... And that's a weird way to begin a conversation 🤔 Once a guy kept asking to buy me a beer and wouldnt take no for an answer so suddenly he just jammed the glass in my hands 😳 I had had enough so I just gave the beer to my huge male friend who was there as well 😂 There's ofc also the question of whether or not the drink is the only thing you're getting if a glass appears in front of you... 🙄 (edited)

I was at a job agency for an interview when I was 17. And this 40-odd-year-old wannabe gangster followed me in and kept trying to harass me and make me drink an energy drink that you could tell was tampered with. A 15 year old teen finally sat between us while his mother looked on and stared the guy down so I could get my paperwork done and they kindly looked out for me while I left. Suffice to say I never accept drinks from someone I don't know or trust. 😓 An offer of onion rings or zucchini fries though would be more attention-grabbing. 😅😂 (edited)

I feel like you describe it exactly. They're buying you something so that you feel like you owe them something. At the very least they expect you to talk to them. It's a major red flag if they're not drunk themselves when they do it. Sober men buying girls a drink are trying to get them drunk. Men only do that when they're trying to gain an advantage 🚩🚩🚩 It's a pickup tactic: 'Get women drunk but stay sober so it's easier to "pick them up".'

The only fact he did not take no for answer is weird. When I offer to pay for something or give a present to someone, it's genuine. I could even say it's a way of pleasing me first. It makes me happy to see them smile when they receive it. And I'm open to the possibility they won't accept it. I clearly won't insist if there's a no. So far, I've experienced that certain people are embarrassed when they receive without the possibility to return the favour. Before, I would have been embarrassed too when receiving a gift. Not knowing what to do, sometimes it even felt like contracting a debt of "hey, don't forget I have a birthday too". But that unwritten rule was in my head, so I made disappear. Easy going. When they insist on paying, I accept. If they offer to pay I accept. If I offer to pay, and they accept, cool. If they refuse, cool too. And no debt are contracted (at least in my head) if at some points they get angry I didn't return the favour, then I might suggest they review the terms "gift" and compare it to a "loan" or "investment". But this has not been necessary since I changed my way of thinking.
