Respect For Those With Mental Illness

I spoke with a woman the other day that took no shame in admitting that she saw a therapist for depression and anxiety, and I told her that I respect her for doing that. Dealing with depression and anxiety on your own is pretty much impossible. I also just read about a senator who was hospitalized for depression. There were well wishers, and there were others saying that he shouldn't be in office. No, you don't get to tell someone that they should quit their job simply because they're suffering from mental illness. Are you going to tell someone to quit because they have the flu? If the answer is no, then people need to stop adding to that person's pain. As the old adage goes, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. It's okay to seek help, it's okay that you have depression and/or anxiety, but never allow anyone to tell you to stop doing what you're doing because of mental illness. We're not broken people, we have pain deep inside that we need to take care of, just as you would for a broken bone. Stop the mental illness shaming, and give us support, even if it's just a few kind words or positive encouragement. For those like myself that continue to fight those illnesses every day, I respect you, and never ever think that you're alone ❤️
