Formal education only becomes valuable after its been used to gain practical experience, as opposed to practical experience which is always valuable. (edited)

Practical personally. Formal education is usually very specific stuff. But expereince is often more valuable in the majority of scenarios. Someone who grew up fiximg cars with their dad will often be more skilled than someone who got training in a college

Both are good. I think it depends on how you plan on applying it.

I think this is too vague a question. The answer lays in the subject matter. I want my therapist to have years of formal training. I want my plumber to know what he's doing because he's done it plenty. I value everything I learned with formal education. I should, I paid enough for it. But I also value the stories I can tell because of my experiences.

Both. Practical experience ony gets you so far and formal education is nothing if not applied in practice

I value what I learn and that I learn. Where it comes from doesn't matter

Practical experience :) even if you don’t have a degree you can become an expert

It depends... I learned how to build things from my father. My mom taught me how to paint, make candles, arts, weave, arts and crafts. One grandmom taught me how to sew and the other taught me embroidery, knitting and crochet. My grandad taught me photography and how to make cactus jelly. My other grandad taught me how to garden alongside my great grandmother. I learned how to cook from the combination of all of them and my great grandparents. I taught myself how to do lots of things as well. I had one year of college but burned out because it was too boring and the math part was killing me.

Practical experience but formal education is good as well. All learning, growth, and knowledge is good.

You can't teach experience, and there are things that are impossible to just figure out, so, yes.

Formal education, you need a foundation for your practical experience.

I’m an excellent student. I’ve always done well without trying too hard and got a 4.0 GPA last semester. But being a student is all I’ve been taught to do. I don’t have practical life skills and now I’m going to suffer because of that. So I think practical experience might be more important

I think practical is better, I believe the more you know the more you're worth, basically knowledge is power

Practical experience, though that's not to say both aren't necessary for a more well-rounded individual (edited)

I guess I'd say I value impractical experience. Like, a willingness to try something stupid, because it *hasn't* been taught in school, or handed down through the generations. I value improvisation and problem solving, and grace in uncertainty. There won't always be a trusted solution. I mean, formal education vs practical experience? Either path can lead there, but not if you follow them.

I would say more practical from you can always learn from mentors but formal is good as well if what you want to do needs more knowledge then what a mentor can give

So this depends. Practical experience is more likely to get you through life easier. Formal education is only worth something if you are going into a specialized job or are learning the bare basics.

Both are important, but I have to say that formal education will prepare you for future experiences so there’ll be less failures than just doing things spontaneously or “winging” it 👌

I think both have their own value. Neither one is better or worse than the other.

I’m most cases, practical experience is more beneficial. Formal education is essential. But most of it is knowledge for the sake of itself. I mean, how many people end up using calculus or mitochondrial info in their adult lives? 😂😂😂 FYI, I’m a biologist so I can say that. 🤭 (edited)

Practical experience. Most jobs you can learn more in the first 6 months than you could in 6 years of school.

It seems the value is to be had in practical experience nowadays. Formal education isn't as valued as it once was and depending on your experience and potential, your practical can get you in the door for free formal education.

I think there's a give and take. They play off of each other. For instance I started filmmaking before college and I was self taught in a lot of ways, then school helped fine tune those skills. But in other subjects, education first was a must.
