Coping methods.
How do you guys handle periods of overwhelming sadness? When there is no events prompting them. You just find yourself extraordinarily sad in the middle of a good day... Do you have a method or are you just used to living with it by now? (Pharmaceutical solutions excluded) I notice this immense weight hidden in people of all ages, origins and background, even those with seemingly "perfect" upbringing, balance and stable present situation. Prevalent difference in demographic indicates majority of such issues in creative types. What is it that drops on 20 year old people at a time when happiness , joy and fun should be the centre of existence? What about people in their 30s and older? Is it a conglomerate of externally induced factors or internalised, possibly inherited dread of existence? Shoot freely and as honestly as you can afford. (edited)

Great question. I've personally experienced moments of onset sadness that were unprompted, and I think it's fair to say that even the same "coping" solutions I've used before might not necessarily always work. I think for a lot of these situations, there's an element of not feeling "grounded" to a purpose, whether that be a short-term goal or long-term vision. Either of those things help align my energy, as long as it's a genuine goal and not a distraction. The distractions never last. To cope with it, I work towards mentally framing myself towards a genuine direction again. Even if I don't figure it out immediately or over time, the act of bringing order to the chaos seems to help.

Lots of things cause this including nothing at all. Life is just hard, no matter your backround and upbringing. Brain chem is hard to rework but doable without pharma. Lots of self care, exercise(even if its just a short stroll), eat something nommy, bath, craft, create, treat yourself with kindness.

I know it's not considered healthy, but I isolate myself. In the past I tried to use different distractions for the sadness, but nowadays I just try to sit with it and process it. It's a human emotion and I think it's important to allow ourselves to feel it without feeling guilty. Emotions come and go and something else will replace it eventually, so I just let them be. Feeling a certain way doesn't mean we have to identify our whole existence with it. If it stays for too long however, I think we should delve deeper for the reason. Sometimes it might be something biological we can easily deal with by switching diets for example.

First step I found to work is to go exercise or go on a walk. This usually automatically makes me refocus and identify why I am feeling this bad. Could be just because I haven’t gotten out enough or because I’m not feeling fulfilled on some aspect of life. In the latter case I then afterwards break that down in some goal I want to strive towards in next couple of days, weeks, months and try to work towards that step by step. Or that’s the theory at least. This does not work al the time or some issues are to complex or you can’t resolve on your own. Main thing is to grasp at the pieces you can control and not on the parts you can not.

About 2 months ago i started this 'spartan training' thing, that i'm still doing (even if i don't need it anymore). Every single time when i get a negative feeling or just start feeling bad, i turn 180 degrees in the direction of that feeling with the sole purpose of finding out what it is and why is it there. Then after answering these 2 questions, i ask myself one more : is there anything i can do about it? The answer 95% of the time is (surprisingly) : yes! Because i discovered something interesting in the mean time : if you have the ability to make yourself feel bad, you also then have the ability to make yourself feel good! Find out what is wrong and reverse engineer it! It won't be easy at first but if you keep at it, in no time there will be no more depression and no mo' anxiety ;) (edited)

It is likely and most often a result of poor self-esteem. Self-esteem, Nathaniel Branden, amounts to the subconscious, total estimate of ourselves--our esteem for ourselves. And it rests on two primary categories: our feeling of self-confidence and our feeling of self-respect. Self-confidence amounts to our feeling of efficacy--not in any one particular area of our lives--but as a general attitude about our relationship to existence. Self-confidence derives from the recognition that our mind is competent to think, to pursue and achieve values. To deal with the actual facts of reality in the pursuit of that which we value. Self-respect amounts to our moral appraisal of our own character. Whatever virtues we value in others, we value in ourselves. And whatever we estimate to be a person of moral respectability, deserving of admiration, we project onto ourselves. Whether our standard of a morally right person is foggy or clear, this becomes the standard by which we measure our own self-worth, which formulates the basis for our capacity for self-love. Whether we are lacking in one or the other because of defiiciencies in our capacity to think or the actions we have taken which damage our self image, or whether we are deficient in one or the other because the philosophical beliefs we hold place our self-confidence at odds with our self-respect, a person who is lacking is a healthy (authentic) self-esteem still finds himself in need of a self-esteem, and so tends to live by some other, less-demanding standard. He develops a pseudo-self-esteem, or an unauthentic self-esteem, which is really a distortion of himself which does not coincide with the actual facts of reality--causing him to develop defense mechanisms to protect himself from the awareness of this contradiction, and driving him ever-further from reality--creating a distance between him and reality, created predominantly by his unwillingness to perceive and understand reality honestly. A person who lives with a pseudo-self-esteem and makes no effort to recognize and improve it, lives his life over an abyss. He seeks reassurances and affirmations from others as a substitute for his own judgement. And what he fears most is not the condemnation or disapproval of others, but the recognition of the defects in his own person. He becomes increasingly more terrified of discovering the nature of his own person--of being fully conscious and perceptive of reality.

It's death. Dying in one form or another. We're not happy, because we know better. The trick is crying- once you can't anymore you make the decision to get over yourself. Just like swallowing your spit when you're thirsty. Eventually, you'll find another source of sweet dopamine that'll get you high enough to forget you're dying. (edited)

This might not register for some but I worship and pray and it helps especially after crying a little but that only if you believe in that unfortunately most don't. Other times I play music that speaks to me and that is either gospel or country music especially when it's Dolly parton. Other times I clean and work work work and then I watch a very good movie etc. one day at a time it is.

The way I cope personally is I tend to do something that provokes other thought, like for example driving, you can't exactly not think about driving. Try doing something intense so you have no choice but to think about other things. Usually why you'll find depressed people work a lot

I just press through most times. Used to be the norm to hide it and pretend everything is "fine". I've been expressing it lately which has caused people to lose confidence in me. Funny how that works. "Express your feelings. Just not the negative ones please."

Defining Success in Life.
I genuinely don’t feel like I need millions in the bank or constant praise and accolades to feel like I am “somebody”.
