I saved a homeless lady that was being attacked by a drunk guy and his dog. She was in a wheelchair so dude was flipping out threatening to kill her. I couldn’t just leave her like that. I was able to get her away and gave her some blankets and pillows from my home.

I've developed the mindset that if I open the door for a person to vent or unburden themselves to me that I never expect anything in return. I don't expect caring to be reciprocal. But that also goes with healthy boundaries, being able to say that I'm not available if they over reach or burden me by their needs. Drawing that line allows me to be empathetic and not hurt myself in the process.

Might not be what you're asking exactly, but did have to keep it secret. I work security. It's hard to know you can't generally help people if they're technically doing something wrong, but doing it to survive. Last year, it got down to like 8°F here one night with driving, biting wind. I found a transient well hidden and sleeping in the back hallway of this hotel I'm posted in, and I cut a deal with him that I'd let him stay and get him a blanket and a pillow if he agreed to leave when I got off shift in the morning. The cold would've meant a very unhappy ending for him and I couldn't be why that happened. I kept it secret from the hotel and he kept his word and left before I'd get in trouble. It felt good knowing he was safe at least for that one night.
