Forgiveness is a financial term meaning to cancel a debt. We use it in relationships, because when you are wronged, you feel like a debt must be repayed. You may feel that payment should be revenge, money, a service, or anything that will make things even between you. However, there is nothing that will make the hurt go away. That debt of the hurt in your heart is etched in your soul; things can never be "even" again. And seeking to have that debt repayed puts a huge burden on yourself. That's why forgiveness is so important. It means you have decided not to seek repayment of the debt. You've accepted the hurt and decided not to let it burden you. It's always important to note that nobody is ever deserving or entitled to our forgiveness. However, forgiveness does wonders for the self. Forgiveness doesn't require acting as if the hurt never happened. Healthy boundaries can still be set after forgiveness to protect the relationship. (edited)
