Long story ahead. In high school I knew a pair of identical twins. Let's call them S and E. Both were bright students and they both loved horses. I had noticed that, unlike other twins I had known, they did not have opposite personalities or interests. Like, usually there is a more outgoing twin, and a shyer twin, or one twin likes pink and frilly things and prefers pop music while the other ones likes black and listens to metal. That kind of thing. S and E were not like this. They seemed to be two identical copies of the same person. Only E was slightly less outgoing than S. But you didn't notice it unless you were looking for it. One day after class I happened to be next to E talking about some unrelated thing when suddenly she makes a startling confession: that she doesn't feel like she's good at anything, or even her own person, because her sister does all the same things and is better at them. I was surprised. It was really sad. I wanted to help her, so I suggested to her that she go search for some interest that her sister doesn't share, and develop skills related to that thing. She loved her twin sister and they never fought. But I was concerned that if she didn't make an effort to do something different, find something that could be hers and hers alone, she would spend the rest of her life feeling like the pale shadow of her sister. I realized that this was why twins often cultivate differences in personality, style, hobbies: because humans have the need to differentiate themselves, to feel unique. It is a vital part of our development and without it, we are left with diminished confidence and self-esteem. I hope E followed my advice, though I don't know because I haven't been in touch with her after finishing school. Anyway, looking back on that advice, I feel kinda proud of the insight I had at 16.
