Years ago, I was walking home from the grocery store and it started raining. I was wearing flip flops and slipped on a wet curb bashing my knee. It hurt. BAD. I still had to hobble home up this giant hill and it started really pouring. I was openly crying as I walking because of how much pain I was in (& didn't think anyone would notice because of the how hard it was raining). A car drove past me but pulled over a half block ahead of me and I saw the driver quickly hop out and start looking though his trunk. As I passed him, he held out an umbrella to me. I sobbed out a thank you, he said welcome and he jumped back in his car and took off. I was soaked to the bone was but I was very touched at the gesture that it made me cry harder. I also did use that umbrella, even though I probably looked like a drowned rat (lol) as I was only about half way home. A kindness I will never forget. (edited)

There was this homeless woman I met on a bus. She was so generous, bc I forgot my fair and she gave me the money I needed to board, even though she herself had nothing. She told me she was on her way to pan handle. We ended up talking about our favorite books, and we had in common that we loved the classics. I remember she said she loved the Jungle by Upton Sinclair. I realized then that people are not as they seem, and sometimes really intelligent and bright people can be down on their luck, but can still be as generous and kind as ever. It made me really grateful to be human and made me see just how alike all really are 💗 (edited)

Just this random chat with older lady at the mall in Canada (I think it was in Toronto) she was speaking about her family and life I spoke about my country and travels. She said she hasn't been traveling much. At the end of conversation I gave her a coin from Serbia and she said she's going to pray for me. It was short but such a heartwarming encounter. 😊

Actually, there are several encounters with strangers that I will never forget. With the exception of my aunt who treats me way better than I feel like I deserve, strangers have always been kinder to me than friends or family. Without the kindness of strangers, I would not be here today.

A gang member I got talking to on a greyhound from NY to Richmond and swapping tracks on our ipods. He got limp bizkit and I got Dre. I shared a packet of wasabi peas with him, he ate a load on one go not realising how hot they were. What happened next was pure comedy.. 🔥🤣

18 years old , I had only lived in Phoenix for 4 months, moved there with my boyfriend and our 9 month old. I had no friends or family there, and got a job right away in security. My boyfriend called me at work and was kicking me and my son out. We had nowhere to go. I called my mom to drive for 3 hours to come and pick us up the next day. Long story short, we ended up being bused to a homeless shelter in a bad part of Phoenix where I had never been before. We stayed the night and was then bused to a circle K and dumped. I was in shock the moment I stepped off the bus. People yelling and screaming about drugs, people being chased by armed men and screaming, I couldn't move holding on to my baby for dear life in the middle of the parking lot. I was still dressed in my security uniform badge and all, my son dressed in Nike from head to toe. I have no money and didn't know what to do. A random stranger came running up to me, homeless, handed me $5 in quarters and told me to get the baby off the street. I went to the pay phone at the corner of the lot and called my mom, I didn't even know where I was there were no street signs or addresses so we picked a random address out of the phone book in which to meet. I needed a cab but had to find an address to direct them to for pick-up . Suddenly some guy, just like in the movies, wearing a trench coat, opened his jacket and asked if I wanted to buy a watch. I was so scared I couldn't speak. Then a guy that had been sitting next to the phone booth walked over to me put his arm around my shoulders and said hey why are you talking to my old lady. The guy with the watch is apologized saying he didn't know I was his old lady and ran away. Obviously this guy had some pull on the streets.

I used to work at a grocery store, and once met an old man who had both arms broken. I began conversing with him, just as a form of customer service and he proceeded to tell me how he used to work for Area 51 back in the day and the Government was out to kill him, and everyone in his retinue that had worked along with him. This was the reason for his broken arms, as he eventually explained. To this day I'm not sure if he was just a crazy old guy, but I really do believe that he thought someone was out to get him.

The night before my wedding I had stayed up all night working on flower arrangements for the big day and realized I had no make up. I was poor and it was late, so I ran to CVS at midnight to grab SOMETHING and when I got up to the counter I was mentioning I was getting married to the cashier and I realized I forgot my CC. I must have looked so defeated, because the lady behind me in line bought everything I brought up. Called it her wedding gift. She made me cry, and reminded me there are good people in the world.

I was coming home from uni and there was a stand of a political party. The guys in that stand had a heated political discussion with an old man and he rebuked every single point they made with amazing arguments. After they finished, he sat on a bench nearby so i approached him and we started to talk about that subject. That man was one of the smartests person i ever met: he was a cardiologist, lawyer (he studied law as a hobby after he finished medical school), was working as a ethics professor at the University (the second largest university in my country) and did lots of interesting stuff when he was young. We talked a bit more than three hours about science, history, politics, religion, and even philosophy. Afterwards he left because he had to give a lecture and i never crossed paths with him again (i knew he taught at my uni but i was at a different school). In any case i wish i could have meet him again to keep talking because i had so many questions left. To me it was the most random encounter of my life yet one of the most interesting persons I've ever met.

On a packed train in India, a disabled man and young boy sat next to me. I was touched by the kindness and respect the boy had for his elder. We couldnt verbally communicate but connected through music (cassette and earphones! Shows how long ago it was!!!!). I will always remember the old man's delighted face listening to music I imagine he had never heard before. We smiled, laughed, sign talked and shared food and chai. A simple beautiful random encounter that highlighted the power of connection, communication and kindness.

It was my freshman year of college and it was my first week adjusting to a new dorm and living situation and I was having a meal at a restaurant in Oric before my parents would leave and I would be on my own for the first time. There were paintings all over the walls and I really wanted one of a wolf howling but couldn't afford it. I saw a stranger grab the one I had been looking at and I was so bummed. But then when my dad went to pay for our meal, the waitress handed me that painting and said that it was a gift from that stranger. I will remember that always

When I was 19, I worked as a bagger at Albertsons. I was so broke and had a quarter of a bottle of syrup in my kitchen for food. Going on the third day of nothing to eat and days away from a paycheck that would go straight to rent. I swept the floor that day and there was a piece of candy on the floor, but I was too afraid to pick it up and get accused of shop lifting. Albertsons has a strict not allowed to accept tips policy and the managers would have spies to check. One lady was very insistent and stuffed a $20 bill in my pocket. I couldn't believe someone would be so nice to me to give me $20. I bought a couple bags of potatoes to eat. I don't know what I would have done without her help.

He was ironically giving out (drunken/stoned) life advice to (drunk/stoned) teenagers who were just seeking munchies. I will never forget Mr. God. Praise that wise old man & his South Asian dialect.

During the pandemic I met an American who had been stranded in my country, had nowhere to go and had already run out of money, and to top it off he only spoke English in a country where only Spanish is spoken. Luckily I had an intermediate level of English, so I took him into my home for a week until they could get him a new flight back to his country.

When people from out of town would stop and ask all the hood rats for directions we would send them into a really bad part of town. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Adult me feels horrible!
