This is a reframing of the adage "doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is insanity"
Theres no such thing as "insanity" - a brain that feels unsafe - for any reason - will create symptoms. Sometimes extreme symptoms. Sometimes baffling and mysterious symptoms. There's no question that our brains get injured. But injury does NOT equal insanity. [Disclaimer] This post is about reframing the idea of repetitive behaviours. This explanation does not excuse behaviours. No one gets to say "I'm dysregulated and my trauma is being re-enacted which is why I'm being abusive." NO. [Disclaimer] "There's no such thing as insanity" does NOT mean that medication is not useful and in some cases life-saving. NEVER go off meds without talking to your doctor. [Disclaimer] "Something wrong happened" does not mean you need to stay stuck. Assuming you have relative safety and access to resources and choices, things can change. If you don't, this is NOT your fault.

Trauma is trauma because the thing that happened was something we did NOT get to choose.
If we COULD have chosen, we would have chosen NOT to be traumatized. Anywhere our choices are taken away, the likelihood of trauma is high. The reverse is also true. If trauma happens as a result of choice being taken, trauma healing happens as a result of choice being restored. ANYWHERE we can... read more
