The history of this holiday dates back to August 1910, when in Copenhagen, more than a hundred participants of the Second International Conference of Socialist Women from 17 countries of the world unanimously approved the decision: to celebrate International Women's Day every year in March - a day of solidarity of women in the struggle for equality. Originally, the idea of ​​annually celebrating the International Women's Rights Day had a political connotation: it was supposed to be a day when conscious women in different countries would publicly, in the form of street actions, declare their demands to the governments of the countries, pointing out various manifestations of discrimination and insisting on ensuring equal rights and opportunities for self-realization Already the first celebration of International Women's Day in March 1911 brought more than 1 million women to the streets of European countries, who protested against unequal pay, lack of voting rights, inaccessibility of professional education, etc. at meetings and demonstrations. Every year, the number of participants in such actions grew, and with the beginning of the First World War, slogans about ending the war appeared among the demands of the protestors. However, the Soviet Union distorted the holiday. During the decades of Soviet rule, Ukrainians, together with the rest of the Soviet people, annually celebrated March 8, which since 1921 had the status of a public holiday, and since 1965 was even declared a day off. However, the original idea of ​​this holiday in the USSR was distorted beyond recognition. The holiday was completely stripped of its political emancipatory meaning and turned into a holiday of "spring, beauty and femininity", when no one even thought of mentioning discrimination against women. So today I would like to congratulate you on a real holiday, the one that dates back to March 1911. A woman has the right to be free. A woman has the right to be significant.
